Description
LL-37 is the only cathelicidin-derived antimicrobial peptide found in humans, consisting of 37 amino acids beginning with two leucine residues (hence the name). It is produced by immune cells including neutrophils, macrophages, and epithelial cells as a first-line defense against pathogens. LL-37 has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi by disrupting microbial cell membranes. Beyond its direct antimicrobial action, LL-37 also modulates the immune response by promoting chemotaxis, stimulating angiogenesis, and enhancing wound healing. It acts as a bridge between innate and adaptive immunity, making it one of the most versatile host defense peptides known.

Research Notes
Research published in the Journal of Immunology and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy extensively documents LL-37's antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. Studies demonstrate its ability to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria including MRSA, neutralize bacterial endotoxins (LPS), and promote wound closure. LL-37 is expressed in response to vitamin D signaling, linking vitamin D status to innate immune defense. It is one of the most studied human antimicrobial peptides with over 2,000 published research papers.
