Description
Melanotan-1 (MT-1), also known as Afamelanotide, is a synthetic linear analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that selectively activates the MC1R (melanocortin-1 receptor) to stimulate melanogenesis. Unlike Melanotan-2 which activates multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes, MT-1 is highly selective for MC1R, making it a more targeted approach to melanin production research. By stimulating melanocytes to produce eumelanin (the protective dark pigment), MT-1 promotes skin darkening that provides natural photoprotection against UV radiation. Afamelanotide has been approved in Europe (as Scenesse) for the prevention of phototoxicity in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP).
Potential Benefits
Research Notes
Melanotan-1 (Afamelanotide) has undergone extensive clinical development, culminating in EU approval as Scenesse for EPP in 2014. Published research in the British Journal of Dermatology and the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrates its ability to significantly increase melanin density and provide measurable photoprotection. Its selective MC1R activity distinguishes it from MT-2, providing a cleaner pharmacological profile for pigmentation research. Molecular formula: C76H111N21O19. CAS number: 75921-69-6.
