Description
Melanotan-2 (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) developed at the University of Arizona. It binds to melanocortin receptors (MC1R through MC5R) to stimulate melanogenesis, the natural process by which melanocytes produce melanin pigment in the skin. By increasing melanin production, MT-2 promotes skin darkening (tanning) independent of UV exposure, though UV exposure enhances and accelerates the effect. Beyond pigmentation, MT-2's activity at multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes gives it a broad range of research applications including appetite regulation and libido studies.
Potential Benefits
Research Notes
Developed at the University of Arizona and published extensively in journals including Peptides and Life Sciences. Research demonstrates MT-2's ability to significantly increase melanin density and skin pigmentation. Studies in the International Journal of Impotence Research also documented effects on sexual function, leading to the development of PT-141 as a derivative. MT-2 remains one of the most widely studied melanotropic peptides.
