Description
MOTS-C (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-C) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide discovered in 2015 at the University of Southern California. It is encoded within the mitochondrial genome and acts as a cellular signal that regulates metabolic homeostasis throughout the body. MOTS-C activates AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), the master metabolic switch, promoting glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, and insulin sensitivity. Remarkably, MOTS-C has been described as an "exercise mimetic" because it activates many of the same metabolic pathways that are triggered by physical exercise.
Potential Benefits
Research Notes
Published in Cell Metabolism by Dr. Changhan Lee's lab at USC, MOTS-C research demonstrates significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, and metabolic health in both young and aged research models. Studies show MOTS-C levels naturally decline with age, correlating with metabolic dysfunction. It is considered one of the most promising mitochondrial-derived peptides in longevity and metabolic research, with ongoing clinical investigations.
