Description
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the first four amino acids of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow. It has been approved in Russia and several CIS countries for treating stroke, cognitive disorders, and peptic ulcers. Semax exerts its nootropic effects through multiple mechanisms: it increases BDNF and NGF (nerve growth factor) expression, enhances attention and memory processes, modulates dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission, and provides neuroprotection against oxidative stress. Unlike its parent molecule ACTH, Semax has no hormonal activity.
Potential Benefits
Research Notes
Extensive clinical research published in CNS Drug Reviews and Neuroscience Letters supports Semax's nootropic and neuroprotective properties. Studies demonstrate significant increases in BDNF expression (up to 4-fold), improved attention and memory consolidation, and neuroprotective effects in stroke models. Semax has been used clinically in Russia for over 20 years, with a well-documented safety and efficacy profile.
