Description
SS-31 (Elamipretide, also known as Bendavia) is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds to cardiolipin — a phospholipid essential for electron transport chain function. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 optimizes the efficiency of ATP production, reduces mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and prevents mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, which triggers cell death. This makes SS-31 a powerful tool for protecting and restoring mitochondrial function, which declines with age and is implicated in numerous diseases.
Potential Benefits
Research Notes
Research published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Circulation, and Aging Cell demonstrates SS-31's ability to improve mitochondrial function in aging, heart failure, kidney disease, and neurodegenerative models. Phase 2 clinical trials (the TAZPOWER study) showed improvements in cardiac function. SS-31 is unique in its ability to penetrate mitochondria without requiring membrane potential, making it effective even in damaged mitochondria. Multiple Phase 2/3 clinical trials are ongoing.
